Vendors in this space can be broken into three groups: ASIC-Based, FPGA-Based, and FPGA Bitstreams. FPGA Bitstreams are added because they become the new personality of the card on which they are loaded. For example, Napatech offers six different bitstreams for its cards, allowing a board to easily be reconfigured from a Capture SmartNIC to a storage- or virtualization-focused card, hence it is in both columns.
